These are handcrafted pieces, made by Colombian artisans, using the matrix of the Emerald, a matrix that comes from the Emerald mines in Muzo, Boyaca, Colombia. This work requires stones that are at least 10 times larger than the final sculpture because both the emerald and the black shale (the rock in which the emerald grew) are soft minerals that easily fracture during the carving process, making it even more difficult to obtain such a detailed sculpture.
